LimeWire is a popular peer-to-peer file sharing program using the Gnutella network that supports a wide range of languages and operating systems including Windows, Mac OS X and Linux.

The program features an open community of similar users (defined by interests, computing power, and bandwidth) to optimize search performance. You can run unlimited simultaneous searches for videos, images, documents, programs and audio and your results are displayed via a tabbed interface. A "Browse Host" tool is also useful to find more files that one particular person is sharing.

The program includes all the usual P2P program features including the ability to filter search results by file type, artist, size, bandwidth etc. You can also resume downloads, throttle upload bandwidth and you get a download library/manager. The latest version continues to include a swarm feature allowing you to download from multiple hosts to get your file faster.

LimeWire Basic 4.12 and above introduces several new features including iTunes integration, firewall to firewall transfers and proxy support.

The developers state that this latest version is guaranteed to include no spyware or adware.

Use a Web-based interface to download music for free

Posted by Admin

Ever since Napster's downfall, Web users have been searching for alternatives. One of the most popular is AudioGalaxy Satellite, which similarly lets you download music tracks. You can search for artists, tracks, and albums.

This program uses a Web-based interface along with a "satellite" application on your PC to handle uploads and downloads. The benefit of the satellite applet is that AudioGalaxy can schedule downloads to happen in the background. The service tells you all the songs available, even if the owner is not online at the time. When the file becomes available, AudioGalaxy will download it as long as you leave the satellite application running.

The downside of AudioGalaxy Satellite is that the system might have grown too big too fast: Pages refresh slowly and sometimes not at all. However, the program has a lot of useful features to address this: You can stop downloads in midstream and resume them at a later time. And you can make requests for programs that aren't currently available, so that once a person comes online with that file, you can automatically download it from them. Finally, because the program is Web-based, it consumes little by the way of CPU power or memory, so you can always keep it open--and check throughout the day to see if the program you're looking for is available.

One of the best clients you can find for sharing files using the BitTorrent file-sharing protocol

Posted by Admin

If you're interested in file sharing of media and other types of files, the best peer-to-peer protocol is the BitTorrent protocol. But the BitTorrent program itself leaves much to be desired. So if you're a file-sharer dissatisfied with your current BitTorrent client, give the free Azureus a try.

It's exceedingly easy to use, but offers features for advanced users as well as Torrent newbies. You'll be able to handle multiple torrent downloads, and limit upload and download speeds, either globally for the entire program, or per torrent. There's also a very useful fast resume feature. And if you want to extend the program's features, there are plenty of plug-ins, such as the nifty Autospeed that automatically adjusts your upload and download speeds, according to your current bandwidth.

One particularly nice feature of this program is that when you install it, you can either specify whether you want to use the beginner, intermediate, or advanced
features, and you can later on change the interface as you gain more experience.

Note: You'll need to have Java installed on your PC in order for this program to work.
